Batman / Scarecrow: Year One

Issue #1

Cover Date: 2005
Subtitle: --
Writer(s): Bruce Jones
Artists(s): Sean Murphy
Storyline: Batman and Robin chased the Scarecrow, who was busy making up for lost time with a former he'd had while in college. Crane told the man how he'd been borne to a junkie and raised by her grandmother - no one else wanted him. By tainting his clothes (and a scarecrow) with rat blood, she effectively taught crows to attack the boy. He learned fear and control from her.
Batman and Robin grabbed a piece of straw they'd found at the scene. They took it to a "project" citizen to have it analyzed. It had come from Georgia. While Crane continued to torment his mentor, Batman and Robin flew to Georgia where they visited the plantation where the straw originated. They found a human skull in a nearby aviary.

Issue #2

Cover Date: 2005
Subtitle: --
Writer(s): Bruce Jones
Artists(s): Sean Murphy
Storyline: Batman and Robin returned to Gotham City after receiving a call from Captain Gordon. A professor had been found recently dead in his home. Batman found a straw, Robin found a book. They knew it was Scarecrow. As Bruce and Dick, they later attended a social gathering where the benefactor was attacked and killed by birds. Batman and Gordon checked the toxicology of both victims and found it very similar. Batman also found that there were no birds - the woman killed herself thinking she was attacked by them. The other partygoers hallucinated it, too - LSD was pumped in through fog machines.
Using the novel found - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Batman and Robin found the killer's name - Jonathan Crane. Crane, at this time, was busy killing a man he believed to be his father. Batman and Robin intervened. Robin was hit with the fear gas and Scarecrow escaped. They were able to save Gerald Crane. Batman went after Crane on his own, knowing he'd be out to kill his mother next. By altering the fear gas to affect only Scarecrow, Batman saved his mother from doom. His fear chased him into a nearby river via a cliff. Robin found no trace of him.

notes

  • Gordon is captain, leading me to believe he was temporarily demoted. Possibly to spend more time with his his Barbara, his late brother's daughter whom he'd recently adopted?
  • Apparently, something in Scarecrow's fear gas caused Gordon, Batman, and himself not to remember their previous meetings.
  • Return to continuity section 2.
