Storyline: Bruce Wayne returned from his exile and was cleared of the murder charges. He sent his lawyer to get Sasha Bordeaux free; she refused his help. When Alfred tried to visit her the next day, he was told she died in a brawl earlier that morning. He told Bruce, and that her family claimed the body. Bruce didn't believe she was dead since she had no family.

Storyline: Sasha woke up and was questioned by her captors. They asked her to come work for Checkmate. After finding her body bag, Batman questioned David Said, of Checkmate. Using his credentials, Batman broke into their facility and did some research.

Storyline: Batman began taking down Checkmate missions. After six months with Sasha "dead," there was still no leads. Sasha was ordered to "fix" the situation between Checkmate and Batman. She met with Bruce Wayne the next day - he begged her to come back, but she refused and told him to not look for her.

Storyline: Realizing David Cain would be a prime target for assassination, Batman set out to guard him. Oracle warned that Floyd "Deadshot" Lawton was thought to be in Gotham City. While Cain was being transported, Deadshot struck.

Storyline: While Batman was attempting to get Cain to safety, Deadshot struck again. Taunting his former teacher, Deadshot was surprised and attacked by Cain. Cain shot him up. Batman got them both to safety and then medical attention. Cain testified against himself and was placed in a maximum security prison; Deadshot survived.
