Storyline: Oracle and Batman showed the new Batgirl around. Barbara had some reservations about training her so soon - she'd been raised and trained by David Cain, a master assassin, she'd never spoken (never taught to speak), and she was only 17 years old. Batman had no problems with her and gave her his complete blessing.

Storyline: Batgirl attempted to break free a good Samaritan who'd been kidnapped by the mob, but he died before they could get out of the make-shift prison he was housed in. He gave her a note to take to his wife; Batgirl began to learn to write.

Storyline: Batman took Batgirl out to rescue a kidnapped kid. After a successful return, Batman was given a tape showing a very young Batgirl killing a man with her bare hands.

Storyline: Batman showed Alfred the video he'd received. Alfred believed it to be a fake and patched up the bleeding Batman. After testing the film, Batman realized it was legit. Batgirl, through a psychic, learned English, but she still couldn't speak - only understand. Batman left to investigate her past.

Storyline: Batman tracked down David Cain and learned the true story of his new partner. Batgirl lost the ability to read body language when she was given the ability to understand speech. She saved the psychic who helped her, and Batman arrived.

Storyline: Still struggling with her fighting skills, Batgirl captured the scientist who experimented on Jeffers (the man who gave Batgirl speech understanding). She and Batman took out some assassins that were after him, and Batgirl took some bullets for the first time.

Storyline: Batman told Batgirl she wasn't ready yet to get back into the fray after giving her some training tapes. He left town for a few days, so Batgirl went out anyway (sans the costume). Oracle confronted her about it and asked her not to go out until Batman said she was ready. While out, Batgirl found and tracked Lady Shiva.

Storyline: Lady Shiva spared Batgirl's life. When she awakened in an ambulance, she realized that she'd suffered broken ribs and a broken arm. She easily escaped and met up with Shiva again. Shiva knew who she was and who her mentor (Batman) was. Batgirl got a cheap shot in and knocked Shiva out.

Storyline: Batgirl asked Shiva for help. Batman talked to Cain about Batgirl and her training. He also watched some more film of her fighting, then proceeded to give Cain a massive beating. Shiva offered to give Batgirl back what she was missing only if she would grant her a death match in one year. Batgirl accepted and regained the mantle of the bat.
