Azrael 48

Storyline: When Azrael entered Nick Scratch's dressing room, he found Senator Halivan dead at the rock star's feet. Scratch screamed for help and framed Azrael for the senator's murder. He chased the vigilante across the stage so that it would surely be filmed. Batman met Jean Paul in his hotel room and told him to burn his outfit - Azrael was to be no more.

Storyline: Azrael disobeyed Batman and saved a chief justice from being murdered by Scratch. Scratch made a speech on TV on why Gotham City should be cut off. With a 5-4 vote, it was decided Gotham City would no longer be a part of the union. Batman visited Azrael. He thanked him for saving lives and they made amends.

Storyline: Batman gave Jean Paul a new outfit (since people were associating his old one with the attacker) and asked him to take down Nicholas Scratch. Azrael got some information from Oracle on a former associate of Scratch's who could have been behind his mutant associates. Disregarding Batman's orders and wearing his old costume, Azrael went in after Professor Lade. Scratch's devils were there and they defeated him. He awakened tied up with Lade, the house on fire. He was able to get everyone out of the fire, but Lade escaped while he went in for others.

Storyline: Wearing his new costume (the old one was destroyed in the fire), Azrael found Professor Lade and got a possible location for Scratch. He set out to find the charismatic rock star, but felt as Jean Paul in an outfit - not as Azrael. Jean Paul was attacked by Scratch's devils again. Lightning hit him, and he felt Azrael merge with Jean Paul. He easily defeated the devils and headed out to find Scratch.

Storyline: Azrael chased Scratch into No Man's Land and faced off against Calibax once more. He defeated the monster and reunited a family. Scratch slipped away.

Storyline: Batman assigned Azrael to get Joker (who'd been seen nearby). He found the Clown Prince, who was mortified that Batman didn't come himself. Joker put Azrael in a pipe and had his henchman weld it shut. Azrael foiled it and got it to roll into the river before both ends were secure. He escaped and saved the hostage, but Joker got away.

Storyline: Azrael went to Oracle to get information. On the way he realized there was a serial killer on the loose - at least three were dead from having their throats slashed. As Azrael and Oracle took a walk, the slasher picked Barbara as his next target.

Storyline: Oracle pointed Azrael to Dr. Leslie Thompkins for information on the serial killer. He appeared to have medical knowledge with the precision of his strikes. At her clinic, he helped save a woman's life. Azrael got back to Oracle's hideout in time to save her from the "Death Dancer."

Storyline: Batgirl brought a gunshot victim to Dr. Thompkins' clinic. She and Azrael went after the shooter. Batman got them information on Nicholas Scratch, who was still at large. Jean Paul attended a Scratch speech, where he gave out guns tot he attendees - he planned to take over NML, the country, and the world. Jean Paul was recognized and captured.

Storyline: With her partner in captivity, Batgirl began stealing the guns Nicholas Scratch had given out. Jean Paul was dressed out and put on display for a public stoning. With his mask in place, he gave way to Azrael. Azrael took down Scratch in front of all his followers.

Storyline: After 3-4 days without sleep, Dr. Thompkins sent Jean Paul out to get some sleep. While leaving, he thought he saw his dead father. He also ran into a girl he'd helped a few days back. Searching for her mother, Azrael saw the spirit of St. Dumas. He saved the lady and reunited her with her daughter. He found a boat where St. Dumas told him it would be and let the two ladies leave NML.

Storyline: Batman asked Azrael to help Catwoman break back into Gotham City. She hitched on a military helicopter. The pilot didn't want to explain to his superiors about a woman in a mask, so he intentionally crashed. Catwoman survived and, with Azrael's help, got the computer discs to Batman.
